For those wondering why this card was made when they already had Grizzly Bears... the reason is the same as Fyndhorn Elves. This was the first set designed to be played without the need for cards from any other set. For whatever reason they considered Grizzly Bears an important staple in the base set, but didn't want to simply reprint the same card.
They chose to directly reprint cards like Dark Ritual and Counterspell because they recognized it would be a bad thing to give people 8 Dark Rituals or Counterspells in a deck outside of Ice Age Block.

@DysprosiumJudas: Along with Bear Cub, Forest Bear, and Runeclaw Bear. Barbary Apes and Cylian Elf are the same except for creature type. 27 others are green 2/2s for 2 with additional abilities.
Magic really loves it's 2/2s. :P

Word of advice: when checking to see if a bear is dead or just sleeping, do not hit it in the head with a large stick.
