Try to take out Serra Angel with one Lightning Bolt and compare then. 4 damage is 4 damage and way outclases 3 damage.

Not that good of a card. At least its instant, making it substnatially better than Lava Axe (Which can only hit players too...). Good in limited as it can kill most everything in this block. Fun flavor text.

Fact that it is common makes it good. Even in today's standard, 3 for 4 damage that can target both player and creatures instantly would be rare or at least uncommon.

@ Equinox523 I think you misread how much this does; it's 2 more than shock, 1 more than bolt.

Its instant speed and hits both creatures or players. Also red can have some trouble with 4 toughness things depending, this hits those.

Its overpriced by 1 to really be competitive though.. At least its a splashable option for budget multicolor.

Let's compare it to other red instant damage spells:

vs. Char: 1 CMC more to cast, no damage to yourself.
vs. Flame Javelin: 1 CMC more to cast (if all Red is used)
vs. Incinerate: 2 more to cast, 1 more damage, no regeneration clause.
vs. Shock: 3 more to cast, 2 more damage.
vs. Lightning Bolt: 3 more to cast, 1 more damage.

It's not horrible, but the inclusion of Lightning Bolt into the core sets makes this less likely to return.
