I suppose he's useful enough if there's enough ways to make him bigger or otherwise more useful in your deck that he's pretty much guaranteed to be affected by one. This is likelier now that WotC has been somewhat pushing Soldiers for a while (which makes this guy better than the superficially equivalent Tundra Wolf), so this would actually make a pretty good addition to the core set. Nevertheless, by itself Serra Zealot really isn't Constructed-worthy. And people overvalue 1/1s for one mana in Limited; I wouldn't play this guy there unless I had multiple ways to make him better such as good Equipment cards.

I'm building a few mono colored decks for teach people how to play and I put him in over Tundra Wolves for flavor reasons. It's a very simple design but it just feels right that there is a 1/1 human with first strike in the game.
