But his Channel is at sorcery speed. Instant discard is a pretty short list: Esper Charm, Haunting Hymn, Resounding Scream and Funeral Charm. Greel, Mind Raker as a very expensive, but reusable, instant ability. Then there's discard tied to creatures dying and such: Cry of Contrition, Dementia Bat, Dying Wail, Insidious Bookworms, Shrine of Limitless Power, and Necrogen Spellbomb.
This list wasn't as short as I'd hoped.

I really would prefer the in-play discard part cost only 1B or 2B, and discard only one card. That would make it much more useful. You'd do discard as early as possible, not later.

1 mana CMC makes him easy to return to your hand or play with Soulshift or anything else that returns cheep creatures. Channel ability is at Instant speed, discards more then any other recent Instant discard.

I kind of like this guy. He shows up for turn two small beats, and eats your opponents cards later game.
The channel is like an emergency Wit's End too. almost.
