Possibly a nice and cheap LD card when used with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or Slimy Cavu.
On the other hand, you'll need another card like Rishadan Port or Icy Manipulator, otherwise this won't work as expected.
And a three card combo (although with up two two cards of it being lands) might not be that great afterall...

A nice card, it borrows its flavor from Kudzu and from Blight, while having a Rancor effect.

Could use with Slimy Kavu and Orcish Farmer along with things to tap lands.

Generally your opponent will just not tap the swamp the Algae is on. However, keep in mind that you can follow this up with Winter's Grasp, Thermokarst, Creeping Mold and Plow Under aimed at all of their other lands. If their only land has the Algae on it, that's akin to removing a land for just Green!
