This is my mono black general, and people just hate this deck with a passion.
As for timing restrictions, it's actually not as restrictive as you may think. Any time before your combat step includes your Upkeep. A very common scenario will be sacrificing Xiahou during my upkeep to pull something crazy from my Graveyard, then just using Volrath's Stronghold to get him back during my draw step.
