Each Time Spiral card was an homage to at least one previously printed card.
This card references Steam Blast in both ability and flavor text and is part of a cycle of cards playing with the set's theme of time: you can have the smaller effect whenever you like, but better if you cast it slower.

The nice thing about this card is that it does a variable amount of damage. If you have a few creature's that have 3 toughness, but you still want to wipe out your opponent's weenies just play it in the combat phase to save your guys. It costs one more than Volcanic Fallout, and can be countered as well, but it comes in handy when you need to do three damage instead of two.

I still use this card, it has never disappointed me the one extra damage than pyroclasm can go a long way, as well as its instant versatility.

DRCCOTD #3
Sulfurous Blast: Now this is a high quality flexible card. It is similar to other red "mass removal" effects like Pyroclasm or Volcanic Fallout, but it both does more damage and has more flexibility. It isn't very useful in the red deck that is playing out weenies and using burn to get them through, but in a more controlling "bigger" version of red that wants to be using dragons and the like to kill, then this is obviously an excellent card.
It is worth remembering that you can decide to not main-phase it to have it only do 2 damage if that would be useful to you (ie. you have some 3 toughness guys you want to beat with, wait unti beginning of combat to cast it).
Also, it does damage to players as well. This make it an interesting choice in "pure" burn decks, to which the killing of creatures bit won't be nearly as relevant as a downside, although in these decks it most likely is weaker than Flamebreak in spi... (see all)

In a thight control deck, this can be a very good card, because of the instant speed. Being able to counter or to clean the board at the end of the opponent's turn is quite valuable, in my opinion. And if you consider that have some good counterspell (Double Negative and Counterflux), I think that Sulfurous Blast can be an option worth looking a bit...
The only Pyroclasm variant with instant speed. Think about it...
4.5/5
Edit: I forgot Volcanic Fallout, but Sulfurous Blast can deal 3 damages to everything... Quite flexible...
