Blue doesn't have a lot of life gain options, so blue mages need to rely on artifacts if they want to increase their life score. Crystal Rod is one such option. Magic's first cycle of artifacts included Crystal Rod, Iron Star, Ivory Cup, Throne of Bone, and Wooden Sphere. None were ever particularly popular. Crystal Rod is best played alongside cheap, efficient creatures (Merfolk of the Pearl Trident, Lord of Atlantis, Water Wurm), and inexpensive spells (Unsummon, Flight, Jump), but it is probably best left out of the deck entirely.

Terrible as a rod for you, excellent as a *** probe for your enemies.
