For 2 mana, Erg Raiders are a great investment. The penalty for not attacking with the Raiders is steep, but it's better than "must attack each turn if able" - unless, of course, your opponent is running Pacifism type auras. Still, getting a 2/3 in black for 2 mana is good, even by today's standards. Erg Raiders fit best into an aggressive black deck, and they are particularly effective alongside Black Knights with a few Bad Moons to beef them up.

Hell, the Raiders are still a good creature. Great value for the cost, and the drawback, even when it becomes relevant, is not that steep.

The draw back is reasonable, and the creature was pretty good at it's time.

Wow. This is still a really solid creature. The drawback can be risky, but in a fast aggro shell I bet this is really effective. 2/3 for 
is definitely not something to ignore.
