15 life is enough of a bonus to actually count as a benefit, though not an amazing one. The ability is... okay, especially with the boosted life total. -1 hand hurts though.

Flavorful, and possibly okay in a deck that really wants to protect some cheap creatures. (Combos with Dark Confidant?) But below par for Vanguard.
