Yep, I'd sacrifice a saproling to save one of my bigger creatures. Or sac a permanent that's about to be destroyed to put a regeneration shield on a key creature. Hell, being able to sac any permanent you control, anytime, for a positive effect is a great ability.

I'd sac excess lands, artifacts (prob mana stones) or tokens in Commander or Modern for just about anything, sure-- But I'm skeptical about saccing anything but a mass-produceable creature token in Standard.
Legacy or Vingtage, I could probably win the game faster than building up a board prescence just to sac it.
I'm not saying it's a bad effect at all- only that the place it fits is sort of specific.
