I love the Fungusaur! Lots of ways to inflate this guy over time, he can be a nightmare if you get him out early and hit him yourself with a damage effect.
I wish he had trample, but what are you going to do. Regeneration works great with this guy,
A sentimental 3.5/5

Fungusaur was the card that taught us the importance of turning target restrictions OFF (i.e. Duels of the Planeswalkers). It encouraged us to think outside the box. I actually splashed blue in my revised green deck just so I could use Prodigal Sorcerer on my own Fungusaur to make him ridiculously huge. I also through Flight in there for good measure, and Serendib Efreet (mainly because I wasn't sure whether he was supposed to be blue or green). Rod of Ruin and Pestilence were other effective ways of pumping up your Fungusaur.

This old guy likes having Prodigal Pyromancer around these days as green and red always made a great team, and you can also pump him up with small burn spells/abilities. Creatures with Fire Whip, even lands with Barbed Field. Want trample and more power? Well, that's why good ol' Wizards prints stuff like Overrun. 4 CMC is none too bad in green, when you can have this out as early as second turn.

The Oracle text is out of sync with the printed text's functionality because Fungusaurs had a weird misprint in Revised Edition. Check any other edition, including Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited - they all have the correct wording that has the same functionality as the Oracle wording.

When I started mtg in 94, I always wanted one of those. I still like them, but sadly Fungusaur is a pretty crappy card. 2/2 for four mana is bad, and most of the time he dies when he gets damage. Should be 3/3 with regeneration, or 4/4, or 3/3 and the first two damage dealt to it are prevented or something like that, in addition to the counter gaining.
4.5/5 for nostalgia and memories, 1.5/5 for beeing crappy powerwise, so I give it 3.
