This guy was always a nightmare for me in the days of Revised. Combine him with forest walking creatures and you've got a serious problem on your hands. He also chips away at your opponent's mana supply, especially with effects that untap him and let him go 2-1 every turn. Instill Energy was always a nice, easy combo.
He is also a nice late-game pull, since he is a massive defensive creature with a built-in Blanchwood Armor.
Another nice bonus is that he isn't, despite appearances, Legendary. Load a few of these guys in your deck, and your opponent is going to have a really bad day with mana sooner than later.
He is obviously a huge target for removal and/or bounce, so try to give him shroud or some kind of cover if you can. Vines of Vastwood is an easy one; Try the Whispersilk Cloak for something more permanent.

Gaea's Liege is to green as Evil Presence is to black. Instead of enabling swampwalk, this is a forestwalk enabler. In order to find any decent forestwalkers, you need to leave Revised. Revised only has Shanodin Dryads. But there are good forestwalkers to be found in Magic. The Liege offers more than Evil Presence, of course, in that it is also a very good blocker - and, if given enough time, both a mana neutralizer and powerful attacker.

I just discovered I have four German blackborder versions of this card! :O
Was I, like, collecting them way back then?
