In the days of Revised, if you didn't have access to ***atrice, Giant Spider was your best bet as far as flying defense in any green deck. Slap Regeneration on this eight-legged monstrosity, and you had a blocker that could stop just about anything. Its 4 toughness meant it was out of Lightning Bolt range, and its relatively low attack power kept it from being Terrored very often. The biggest problem with Giant Spider was that it couldn't tangle with the likes of Serra Angel, Air Elemental, or Sengir Vampire (the quintessential flyers of their day) without some sort of help. Fortunately, Giant Growth was usually just one green mana away.

A classic, and one of green's bigger pain-in-the-*** creatures back in the day. There was a host of low-level flyers that were stopped dead in their tracks by this guy. At 4 toughness, he got the job done.

Why are you talking about the Spider in the past tense? She's still around, and has been confirmed for 2011. As has Giant Growth.

its never going to be seen in constructed again... so past tense is fitting

Hmm, this or Blightwidow? This or widow? Hmm...
Still, I love the archaic wording. Even without the keyword in existence, they should have had enough sense to come up with the troll-reach desc., not that weird-but-hilarious one.
