It's interesting that even with such a major power up of the previous cycle of life gain cards, their purpose remains exactly the same: these are skill testing cards which are designed to appeal to newer players for their obvious synergy, but are actually very low power.

The dragon's claw is definitely the best of the cycle, because it can actually be used against red burn decks fairly successfully and because red has quite a few spells which can be cast over and over again, like glitterfang.

This cycle has become a standard part of core sets, replacing the previous cycle of life-gain artifacts (Wooden Sphere et all).

Only noobs find this card awesome. Don't believe me? Read Mark Rosewater's articles in the Making Magic column. This card is only to get noob players to be impressed because they over value life gain. My words, not his. But he basically said the same thing.

Better than the old "gain life for casting colored spells" cycle, but that's not saying much of anything.

I don't see why they can't be more efficiently costed. Would it break the game that much to have it cost 2?
