This was a lot more fun before Mana Burn was eliminated. I loved dropping two or three Mana Flares and forcing my opponents to think hard before casting spells, while I just had mana sinks and X spells.

This was designed for cards like Shivan Dragon and Fireball, and even cards like Iron Star, which let you trade one unspent mana for one life rather than one damage.

Mana Flare is great for getting high mana cost creatures into play quickly, and doubles the burn potential of your Fireballs and Disintegrates. It suffers from the same drawback as Howling Mine, however, by benefiting your opponent before it benefits you. With such a powerful ability as doubling the mana produced by lands, giving your adversary this edge can be quite dangerous. With that said, the very fact that this is red makes it worth playing. No color is as dangerous when boatloads of mana are floating around.
