I think the idea with these 5/1 black creatures is that you work around the low toughness by removing creatures that could deal you damage, something which black is unparalleled at; creature killing! With a clear lane into the red zone, Dross Crocodile and Rotting Fensnake can get in for Lava Axe-esque damage unlike many black creatures of that cost or rarity. And they are good chump blockers too. So while they're not great, I can see a principle here.

This card, if managed, can do some quick damage, all you have to do it to prevent blocks by 1/1 creature (by nuking it) (i.e. darkblast )
Or you can else use it to block stronger creatures ( 5/5 ).
It dosent stay alive long but can do significant damage/breaking walls.

Definitely a nice artwork, yet it's hard finding the Mirrodin flavor on it when comparing the crocodile to the far more metal-cloaked one on the original artwork.
The power/toughness relation is also very black, although it's certainly not a card worth playing in constructed. I think it could actually proof somewhat useful in draft nontheless.

Turn 3 Lord of the Undead, Turn 4 Dross Crocodile, Turn 5 Vulshock Morningstar or other way to buff, He's a 8/4. Rite of Consumption to deal 8 damage at the player, gain 8 life, then return him to your hand with Lord of the Undead. Yay!

Two words. First strike.
This in a red deck w/ Lightning Talons or something is amazing. Drop that and you've got an 8/1 w/ First Strike, pretty good.
Could stand to have a slightly lowered mana cost though.

Honestly, the original artwork was just as fantastic as this one, But man... This card is so playable. Whispersilk cloak and then give it double strike. 2 round win.

One of the cards I loved when I came into the game (Xth), but I've never gotten a chance to use it successfully in a deck. The art on it is just so great I'm going to keep trying though.
