This is ridiculously good in EDH (er... Commander). The mana shouldn't be much of a problem, and you get a re-usable creature tutor. If you have Wheel of Sun and Moon you don't need to worry much about losing a creature.

Pay 5, pay X to get a creature to your hand. Sure it seems bad... until you consider that only two colors have any reliable way to tutor for creatures, most of which are single-use spells. This is colorless, so any deck can run it, and it's REUSABLE.
