The game could always use more hoofprint counters.

Imagine if every four times you drew a card, you got an extra, mana-efficient, really nice creature card too. Sounds like a good deal to me, and the cost is negligible... It doesn't go away after you use its summon effect either, so with a deck heavy in drawing, you can mill out lots of flying deathstags. And we can't of course forget the always-useful Doubling Season, which in this case becomes a Quadrupling Season (The tokens wrack up twice as fast and spit out twice as many creatures! That's 2 flying 4/4s for 3 every other time you draw)
Now imagine slowly, carefully lining up a spirit stag so you can drop it exactly into its pre-existing hoofprints. Now laugh. My work here is done.
PS - WOOT! Another weird counter!

Not as popular as Niv-Mizzet, The Firemind + Lorescale Coatl, and doesn't allow for an explosive next turn.. But, it's really good in control decks and cycling decks, and it isn't deal with easily! :)

Run with Sylvan Library
If you can get more than 1 out then you can have a nice creature every turn,
also Doubling season.

It came out a long time before Luminarch Ascension, and doesn't require no-damage to activate. It's not worse, it's different as you said. I'd say it'd even be better in a heavy draw deck, like a UW control deck.

I dunno if Luminarch Ascension is better than this... At least in multiplayer, Hoofprints doesn't give you aggro, while Ascension makes you the #1 target. The only problem about this card that I can see is that you can only activate it on your turn.
It's a great card to use with cards like Attunement!

This is ideal in UW control decks, such as Rule of Law. Even better with something like Arcanis, the Omnipotent.

Why is a great Win Con for Enchantress getting a low rating? Adding this to a deck with Sigil of the empty Throne and Fastbond is like seriously fast.
