I personally think this card is really nice. It tells a nice story if you know a bit of Lorwyn lore - it's one of the plane's green/black elves using some nature magic to revive one of its kin. Perfect flavor for a G/B dack - the vines in the art really remind me of green spells.
Also, few people know this is part of a cycle - Research the Deep, Redeem the Lost, Recross the Paths and Release the Ants.

Pretty neat art and the potential for a reusable retrieval.
I see no problems with this card.
Oh, and Erik? The flavor I get is you lowering a rope to someone. You might get the rope back, or you might not. But whatever the case, you'll get your friend.

Get a creature, which is card neutral
Chance for Card advantage @ 2 mana, which is nice
Also card filters your next draw and may let you know what your opponent is drawing into, which is information.
That's actually a lot of good stuff at 2 mana.

Good if you have some control over the top card of your and/or your opponent's library.

It's slow, but this card always ended up saving my ass with my B/G casual back in Shadowmoor.

Erik's Random card 6/11/2011
Morningtide had a re-design before it got to development. "Great designer search" winner Alexis Janson got to fill some holes, and made this card.
Kelly Digges tweaked the card so it would be more multiplayer friendly.
Other than that, it sailed through development. But would it sail through today?
I don't think so. The card doesn't really tell a good story. You get a creature spell back, and if you are lucky you keep this spell. That doesn't really resonate with me. But maybe it is intellectually stimulating. Maybe this creates new strategic situations; maybe, but my experience with this card wasn't that either. It isn't really worth building a deck around. When I have this in my hand instead of "raise dead" I am slightly less picky about the quality of the target, since I might get this back, and then the limiting factor on what I am doing could become mana instead of spells. But really this is raise dead.
I think we would try other black s... (see all)
