Well, it looks like your Darksteel Colossus is not really a huge metallic titan, but a large colony of elves. And I have just the tools to fix that, where'd I put my Hurly-Burly?

Mercy Killing and Bloodseeker. It's like a slap on the wrist to anyone trying to build up a monstrosity.

Good thing it's an instant, so you can use this with undercosted strong creatures that have an upkeep drawback - which would in fact make it a mercy killing, since they would have died anyways; possibly a slow and painful death.
Sheltering Ancient makes a good shelter for five Elf Warriors.
Phyrexian Soulgorger's soul can get gorged for eight Elf Warriors."
A Sigil Captain can promote you all of these.
You can also grant them an Elvish Promenade to Oran-Rief, the Vastwood.
If you let them visit Voice of the Woods, they can call his best friend together.
Priest of Titania will gladly join them as well. Once she's there, i'm pretty sure a lot of others will follow:
Where she is, there is mana. And where is mana, there is action!
If you have something like a Serendib Sorcerer, mercy killing your opponent's Darks... (see all)

With Wilt-Leaf Liege:
Mercy Killing
Sacrifice target creature you control: Put more than enough number of green and white Elf Warrior creature tokens your opponent could ever manage to block. Then deal damages to him or her equals to the power of the sacrificed creature multiplied by three.
"There is no kill like overkill."
Also a great Remover against Indestructible, or after your opponent declare blocker in front of your Tramplers.

I know what the flavor is supposed to be, but I can't help but imagine a bunch of elves bursting out of the creature's belly, Alien-style.

In a token deck put Fallen Ideal in one of your creatures. Sacrifice all the tokens, us this and have TWICE the token that you sacrificed. ^_^

Use with decks that prefer huge ammount of weak tokens rather than huge creatures, like with the Convoke ability. Additionally, it can be used to save your creatures from destroy target spells.
If you're also playing with Red, you can use those cheap X/1 creatures that gets sacrificed at end of turn like Elemental Appeal and Ball Lightning
