I got my revenge on this bad boy with Doran. Ball Lightning wasn't such a tough guy then :)

Ball lightning is an amazing card that really fits into red. It can be very risky to play due to pingers who can kill it before it even attacks, and pretty much any card that deals at least one damage at instant speed. Also creatures with firststrike really ruin ball lightnings day. But when you get past all the little problems that can present themselves as threats for ball lightning it is pure undeniable power.

I have seen three ball lightnings hit the field in one turn and it was gg right then and there.
It is one of thouse few older cards that has actully aged well. R&D knows that this card is loved by many, infact that is why it has seen so many reprints and knock offs. Put simply it is a classic.

Also, if you love Ball Lightning and you perfer to play green (possibly for the mana excel) consider groundbreaker.

Putrefax is the next in a long line of the one-shot creatures like this iconic one, which no burn deck should be without. Very hard to deal with if your opponent doesn't have removal or first strike, and it can usually either knock a big chink of life away or exchange with a few creatures, or better yet, both. This card is likely the best of it's type that will ever be made, similar to lightning bolt or counterspell, although force of will competes for the title of best with the latter.

Best counterspell is a difficult spot to give. Counterspell is just all around useful, and Force can be used without mana. But then you have to more focused ones which do small things really well. Like Flusterstorm or Mindbreak Trap.
