Selez: Possibly, Wizards had a fear of The Dark. Fear of The Dark. They had a constant fear that something's always near.

It was called The Dark because it was set during the dark age in Dominaria that followed the Brothers' War. Artifacts and magic were feared, wizards were shunned, and the people turned to religious zealotry. Reflected in the flavor of cards like Witch Hunter and Angry Mob.

From the Magic Wiki at Mtgsalvation.com:

"The devastation that followed The Brothers' War has left the once-mighty nations in ruin, Civilization being reduced to a handful of loosely aligned city states, all ruled under the Puritanical Church of Tal. Goblins and bandits stalk the roads between these cities, and winter seems to last longer and reach further south with each passing year. After the plunder of the lands that the Brothers performed, artifice and magic are treated with suspicion, fear and hatred, and the Church of Tal seeks to eradicate them. So goes their saying "Suffer not a magician to live", meaning all spellcasters are evil and cannot be trusted at all."

I believe The Dark was somewhat inspired by the Dark Ages of the real world. It seemed like a really ominous and foreboding place and time--qualities that we tend to associate with darkness.

As The Dark closely followed Antiquities, this card was probably overpowered back in the day. Or night. Why was it called The Dark, exactly? I wish I understood the point of that set.
