Yes it does contradict it, the card reads at the end of your upkeep, errata reads at beginning.

@antii Because this is a creature with an ability. Instill Energy grants the abilities of haste to the creature, but with the modern wording, things that affect hasty creatures don't affect that.

A solid, potentially annoying-as-hell card provided that you've got four in a deck. Works especially well alongside other "return from graveyard" critters like Ashen Ghoul.
@mindbend, Argylpuff: Yes, unfortunately the once-possible infinite mana combo with this card and Ashnod's Altar is no longer possible. However, you can still pull it off with Ashen Ghouls and a mana filter like Bog Initiate or Initiates of the Ebon Hand.

Sorry, Mindbend, but Ashnod Altar and four Nether Shades do NOT make infinite mana. The Shades only return to play once, at the beginning of your upkeep. If you sacrifice all 4 of them, then you must wait until your next upkeep to return only 1 of them. Then you can sacrifice that one, and wait until your next upkeep to return only 1 of them.

Doesn't really contradict, just worded completely different. Wording back then sucked.

This would almost be mediocre, but Haste saves it from the scrappy heap. Nice card, though the choice between it and Nether Traitor is kinda difficult.

if Instill Energy no longer grants haste after July 2010 oracle updates - why does this guy still got Haste?

eh, I prefer ashen gouhl, even though I have to pay mana to bring it back under the same context, at least ashen gouhl is a 3/1.
also the oracle text Does contradict the original printing, see begining of upkeep versus end of upkeep.
it matters because originally no matter what you do lord of the pit triggered first, then cumulative upkeep things (or anything that says during your upkeep) and then this last. now this triggers before cumulative upkeeps and possibly (if you want it too) before lord of the pit or other begginging of upkeep things. it seems minor but it could be a big difference.
but since it says end on the card most people will still do it at the end, because they wont know any better.

The errata completely contradicts the original printing. Ridiculous
