The Merfolk Assassin combo is probably the reason that when they reprinted this in Timespiral and notable included it's combo buddy in the reprint as well. Not terrible but way too costly in terms of mana.
I am also a really huge fan of the light coloring artifact got in The Dark. It makes them look sort of eerie and very awesome.

I don't think it's that costly, considering blue has always been limited in how it can directly remove creatures that it couldn't counter. Just 
and tap the Assassin. Sure, Royal Assassin or Norritt with Icy Manipulator can bring the same result for 
but that's black-based and creature removal is a dime a dozen in black.
Good oldschool combo, and on its own it's decent sideboard against blue in the worst case. It can also combo with Reef Shaman or something else that turns someone else's land into an island.

Actually REALLY good in casual/limited with the Dark using Merfolk Assassin. Or, with enough mana, target a bunch of creatures and bounce the barge...

Turn it into a creature. Have Training grounds. Target your opponents creatures and it. Tap your Merfolk Assassin . Blue removal. Or just attack with it and if it dies then so does what ever it targeted.
