There was 'count as a wall' creatures before defender and these wall evading effects were printed. So that's not the point why we don't play with walls anymore. The reason is that any defender that cannot readily made an attacker sucks.

The past is filled with Walls and wall-affecting spells. Ever since Defender, these cards have become mostly useless.
