It works to enable power 5 stuff. Or things that care only about power, like pandemonium or soulblast.

Thunder strike, Fling.
It's fair, guys. This would break the curve if it cost any less or got any stronger. Just be glad to have a creature with power higher than it's CMC(At a flexible cost!)

It's a deterent for sure. Used to be not many 5 def critters out there, now they're a dime a dozen.

Even if you could enchant it somehow, a 5/1 without haste? This is what igneous pouncer should have been mana cost at, and this creature should be more like 5/2 and wither maybe, sorta take a creature with it but die at the same time.

@Donovan_Fabian: ಠ_ಠ Wither is (thus far) only for Shadowmoor, let's not go crossing magic streams. I understand that you feel this card is underpowered, it is. Sets need cards like this, it prevents powercreep (or that's the idea) and it gives the creative team time to shine. This card is awesome it drives home the point of Grixis, a desolate wasteland where horrible mutations occur to near extinct tribes and the only survivors are left alone because of their martyr-like battle strategies. It may not be playable in any kind of constructed, but it does a fantastic job at it's job.

No haste? No first strike? No trample? This card is unplayable, by turn four any opponent creature is able to kill it easily. Overcosted.
