I do believe this is the first example of off-color activation in Magic.

I actually really like this creature. The 1 damage when it comes into play is both flavorful and makes perfect sense. The off color activation is really flavorful too. +2 for 1 damage is a really interesting trade off. Too bad its not 1R or just R to use the ability though.

It's not a bad card exactly, but it was one of the only examples of a U/R creature for a while. It's no wonder that U/R decks didn't see much play for a long, long time.
