This thing is awesome utility! It even destroy's targeted Planeswalkers (or artifacts, enchantments, LANDS). I think it's funny that it's a fungus. I don't know why.

They realized that it could destroy planeswalkers. Green needed something that could as it really didn't have any options (same thing with black) they gave them both a solution in Zendikar, green with this and black has the Hexmage.
The game is about rules and balance as much as it is about flavour.

Solid creature with a great flex ability, I love it. Really cool artwork and flavor as well, this guy would be right at home with other plants like the Fungusaur or the Golgari Rotwurm.
As many others have mentioned, wasting a Planeswalker is a nice option.
He also does a fine job of taking out those pesky artifacts and enchantments. In a pinch, use him to take out a strong land like Crypt of Agadeem.

Closest alternative is Acidic Slime. Slime is effectively 1 less to cast and has deathtouch, but can't kill planeswalkers.

Why do planeswalkers fear Zendikar? Is it the volatile terrain, blood-thirsty vampires, or ancient traps? Nope. It's the Fungus Beasts. Planeswalkers HATE fungus beasts.

good spot removal, eliminate the splash land they have, and it is still a solid 3/3 body, at 6 mana it is costly, but think of all the things you could end up killing then, whats that, you are gonna chandra's last ability next turn for game, sorry, mold shambler, kicked, you are gonna have to think of something more creative then recycled spells

Perhaps the kicker should have been G or its CMC should have been one less. But its still a really solid green card with all the useful enchantments people tend to play in Zendikar. And even when someone doesn't have an enchantment, artifact or planeswalker you can still take out a useful land...
