Of course, but it's still a very good attacking-from-the-graveyard card. Mind it.

Nightmarish aggro back in fourth grade. Ron Spencer at his absolute best.

Great card when used with Buried Alive, Nether Shadow and any mana or life providing artifacts

well with four of these in your graveyard they can come back one at a time until they get exiled.
Ichorid is good for attacking for a lot on turn two/three, if you know how to dredge, though.

It's indeed worse than Ichorid in most cases.
But don't disregard it, when comparing P/T, mana cost and the ability to get the card during your upkeep onto the battlefield if the card is in your graveyard, along with the Hase should pretty obviously show that Ichorid was inspired by that Ghoul.

This is actually better than Ichorid if we are talking about recursion shenanigans. This still happens during upkeep, so if you have four of them in the graveyard and a way to generate at least 1Black from a creature sacrifice you can generate 'infinite' mana.

There is zero reason to be comparing this to Ichorid. It makes a better comparison to Shivan Dragon actually, under the heading "Creatures with activated abilities that cost mana'', albeit the two effects they get are hugely different styles.

Ichorid however, is the centerpiece of a deck that does not use mana. There are like two or three decklists I know of that can pull that off. Maybe a much more encyclopedic studier of the game can name 10 or more ways to win the game without mana, but Ichorid did it well enough to beat the crap out of VINTAGE. So, Ashen Ghoul simply does not deserve to be talked about in the same sentence as Ichorid.
