Since he's old, his attacks are weak, and yet his experiences have made him very tough. Before he's completely incapable of fighting off attacks, he goes to a place where he can die fighting, the worst place he could possibly go: Grixis, where green and white are aberrations. I'd gladly let him fight in my G/W deck if I had a copy.

Consider how many 2 CMC creatures are able to break through that 5 toughness. Technically there were five ever printed, but in any real turn 2-4 situation it's more like zero. Only Dimir Infiltrator's unblockable attribute or various flying creatures can get by Grizzled Leotau in the early game. This guy hoses ground-bound aggro decks all by himself.
Consider also how many 2-drop walls are saddled with less than 5 toughness, less than 1 power, and defender.

I'm not quite sure why but I absolutely love this card, just the feel of it and the flavor.

I prefer the solid Watchwolf. Anyway this is a great defender.

Try this out with Piston Sledge . Turn three, you've got a 4/6. Take that Woolly Thoctar!
