It's unlikely that you're going to get seven Merfolk on the board in Standard (even with an aggressive curve starting with Cosi's Trickster and Enclave Cryptologist), but if you drop Mentor on turn five with Mana Leak or Deprive backup, you'll get a token. Maybe that token chump-blocks, maybe it gets bigger thanks to Coralhelm Commander and Merfolk Sovereign. Who can say? This fishwizard's okay in my books.

ummm... I just think it's amazing that he gives you a bonus for countering spells...
The fact that the bonus is a 1/1 merfolk tolken is... amazing?
Combine that with the two merfolk lords we have in standard right now and, well i'm just surpised I haven't seen a tier one deck with him... 1/1 tolkens for doing what control does best seems awesome
