Why is the creature type not Dwarf Spellshaper?
This is totally a proto-Spellshaper.

clearly we are not worthy of +1/+1 counters.
Oh wait.

According to one of those rules/ tips cards from shadowmoor, +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters react to each other the same way matter and antimatter would: by destroying everything on the field.
Just kidding, they cancel each other out and are both removed. No more no less.
I'm glad they discontinued +1/+0 counters and the like.

if your opponent uses Lesser Werewolf to put +0/-1 counters on your creatures, and you put a +0/+1 counter on it, do they both get removed?
Anyway, this card is mostly bad-ish.

I started playing during Ice Age, so Fallen Empires was pretty fresh back then. It was still scoffed at, as I recall. Yeah, the set doesn't have too many cards still seeing play these days.
But I love the flavour in these old sets! The fatalism, the desperation of the various factions on Sarpadia can be felt thru the cards. Just look at this card's flavour text, for example. The gloomy atmosphere matches that of Myth: The Fallen Lords.
Give me story telling like this any day over that Bruckheimer-esque Eldrazi crap.

I'm so glad they only do +1+1 or -1-1 these days.
I don't agree with their decision to never do both in one set though.

Terrible. Had it given out +1/+1 counters, it still would have been weak, but at least playable for its time. Now, it's just a slow and clunky joke.

In fact it's the ONLY proto-Spellshaper!

Meh, weak. Also, a rare. Does not feel very rare to me.

So close to greatness, or at least playability. Between the discard, the mana, and the tap, the activation cost is clearly too high. If any one of the three elements were removed, I think the little guy would have had a chance.
If the discard element was removed, this guy would have been pretty good, in a Thallid sort of way.
Superior in flavor and mechanics to Dwarven Catapult.
