They're not bad, but Coalition Relic tries to make you think so.

Coalition Relic is better but, Coalition Relic is reaaallly good. this cycle is worth it, 3mana for a comes into play untapped manaproducer that makes a color is pretty good, the sac part is gravy.

I've heard these called unplayable, but I think they deserve a chance, at least in masques block. For one thing, they're useful because they can add double mana in a pinch, by sacrificing them as they tap. They still can tap for mana earlier, but the sac also let's you pull instants out if you've got no lands or anything open. All in all, I kinda like the pieces of Ramos, flavorwise and mechanicwise.

Ramos touched himself, and there was life.

The fact that this is rare probably makes it undervalued from a power persective. "What? THIS is my rare!?! I hate this card! It's terrible!" At uncommon, these cards might have actually ended up being more popular. At the very least, they'd be common (and cheap) enough to act as acceleration in budget EDH decks.
Given that it's Mercadian Masques, you could probably have opened something much worse, anyways.
@BlakeHN: I'm pretty sure that there's at least one creation myth that goes that way.
