Better than it looks.
This card is on a very short list of things that can counter activated and triggered abilities. (All of which are either rare and expensive; or have a narrowed field of use, like this card)
No, It won't stand up to any of the "mass removal" fates that often befall a creature, but it's range of countering might surprise you. Theres a lot of high powered rares and mythic rares enjoy targeting your creatures, and Some of them are normally very tough to counter like planeswalker abilities or astral slide. ....This card is most analogous to a voidslime spellshaper that can only counter effects that target your creatures.
At uncommon level it's got far more stopping power than it seems.

Got a Gilded Drake but nothing worth trading for? Choose anything your opponent has then "protect" it with the Escort. For three mana and a discard, the drake is yours.

What happens if you use this to counter an ability that targets multiple creatures/permanents? Does the ability get entirely countered, or does the creature you protect simply ignore the effects while the other creatures are still affected?

very good in a merfolk deck, anyone realised lullmage mentors ability triggers when you counter on of your own abilitys? and if you dont like discarding use a vodalion mage and dont pay the extra 1 :) simples

First card capable to counter triggered abilities and second card capable of counter activated abilities: the first is Interdict...
Nobody have mentioned that this one can counter spells and abilities that target opponent's creatures, like auras and Giant Growth!
Nice card, versatile and powerful. A bit annoying...!
