Still not sure how a creature made of flotsam is suddenly hiring its services out.

He's among the strongest of mercenaries, though, considering you'll still have five or more mana lying around after you play him.

Strange bit of flavoring this being a Mercenary.

This card was outdated by the Drifting Shade, which has flying, the same ability as the Shambler, and all for one less mana.

@Deadeye: Yeah, and has -2/-2 comparatively. This guy is a beast in the right deck, and is at a default resistant to a lot of burn, whereas shades are rather...flammable.

While I'd much rather play Nantuko Shade, the ability is very powerful. Often times you force your opponent to chump block your mere 3/3, lose a large creature as you douse him in mana, or similarly lose a ton of life.

Also, it's *really* hard to beat such awesome art. It mixes so well art-wise with Negator, Obliterator, and follows the mana curve!

Not sure how this didn't get a lawsuit of some kind... looks very much like an Alien.

I have to admit my liking for this guy. One of the few decent Mercenaries from Masque Block, and a solid card on its own. (As a kid, he was an automatic inclusion in any black deck: "cool art from Chippy and a great late-game beater to dump mana into? Perfect!")

Are there better shades out there? You bet. But Primeval Shambler can measure up in one important way: you don't have to constantly baby-sit him (i.e., keep mana available for pumping on defense). A toughness of 3, higher than most other shades, means he survives most burn and small creature assaults. Yeah, his cmc of 5 is prohibitive (and 5 cmc creatures, particularly in black, need to give you a WHOLE LOT to warrant play), but nostalgia is on his side here. Solid, fun card.
