This card is a bear to fight against.
It is very hard to block effectively, and can turn any medium to high power creature into a monster.
It is very hard to attack effectively into it.
The flexibility and free activation is what gives it the huge leg up over modern equipment.
How many times have I been forced to let creatures through, only to have my opponent leave it untapped for defense...

One of my friends found a Japanese copy of this in a dollar rare box, and he's used it in most of the EDH decks he's built since finding it. Most people don't believe him when he tells them what it does.
I recently bought a copy myself, and I'm trying to figure out a good deck to put it in. It seems like an awesome card to use in EDH. I mean, it can be used for defense, it can be used for offense, it can be used at instant speed, and the extra +1/+1 can make a difference in combat. I really don't see why this doesn't see more play in EDH.

If it gave haste instead of trample, flying, or first strike it would be an EDH staple.
