I think Dark Ascension's Vengeful Vampire is a shout out to this. Anything to make this guy look better!

OMG, so it isn't a 4/2 flier for 4 mana. Big deal. Outside of removing it from the game, it won't die permanently. The reason no one plays it is the format is too fast for it and many simply don't have them or have access to them making it...unplayable by circumstance. By itself the card would be useful in a deck, it simply isn't overpowered like everyone seems to expect every single card to be these days.

The idea for the card was not bad, it is just absolutely unplayable. Make it a 4/2 for 4 mana or something that would be pretty sweet. Maybe if this card had haste (or its equivilent) and returned to the battlefield two turns later or something....that could be worth the casting cost However, for 6 mana this card was really terrible to begin with. Then they made the shivan phoenix which is identical except for an upgrade to a 4 toughness, and then tcame he magma phoenix which can do direct damage and is a little better. What do call an awful card that keeps getting more obselete by newer but also crappy versions? I guess Firestorm Phoenix.

Overcosted? Sure, especially by today's standards, but this was a very unusual card for its time. Creatures that were almost impossible to kill were hard to find back then, especially when they could come back from effects that would kill a regenerating creature. It's also a mid-sized red flyer, which was also somewhat unusual, so I can understand why WotC overbalanced it.

Definitely a card that should be revisited in a more cost-efficient form.

Shivan Phoenix is better in every single way.

It was a cool card (and at the time, its ability was pretty unique.) You can see how WotC was really cautious about this ability at first, too -- overcosted, with the weird rule that you can't play it again, etc. Amusing that only a little later they would print Enduring Renewal which broke the game wide open via a similar mechanic without that failsafe.

Sadly overcosted, but it was a neat idea. I could see it being useful in draft if used Legends for that, though I suppose any 3-attack flier is going to be useful in draft.
