With the infinite mana combos in Legacy and Vintage these days, it makes sense that this has a tap effect.
It's still a bit overpriced for my tastes, though. Maybe have the casting cost go to {4}, keep the {8}, {T} and maybe deal 5 damage? I dunno. It needs more testing. Plus, based on the flavor text and the fact that thing Ring seems to have to do with that actual story (The Arabian Nights, I mean), it seems like it should have some kind of black hate, or at least non-white hate. If it did, then it could be like this:

Aladdin's Ring {4}
{8}, {T}: Aladdin's Ring deals 4 damage to target non-white creature. Tap that creature.

Just a thought.

The only possible reason I can guess as to why this would be good is because 4 damage kills a good deal of creatures on the spot, and "protection from artifacts" isn't all that common nowadays (and back when that card first came out, it was practically unheard of).

If you really want to burn, go with red. I've got better things to do than tap 8 mana for a 4 pt. one-shot.

That face on that ring looks like it belongs to a person out of an 80ies/90ies science fiction comic book.
The art as a whole looks somewhat comic-bookish. Which is weird, since i don't feel the same way about Frazier's other art pieces with these surreal swirly backgrounds. (e.g. Forcefield, Disrupting Scepter, Jandor's Ring Healing Salve, Apprentice Wizard and of course the five Moxen.)
