Andrew's Occasional Random Card of the Day #1 - 6/27/2011 - Scavenging Ghoul

This card was before my time, and it doesn't have enough power level appeal for me to have ever gone back to play with it. If I need a regenerator that badly, I can afford to pay some mana, and get a better deal than a 2/2 for 4.

That said, this is the type of Alpha card that really tells a story, and the type of card that Wizards tried to recapture starting with Magic 2010. The idea that this little guy wanders around the battlefield, picking up scraps to regenerate his own injuries, rather than ask you to invest your dark magic mana into him, is very evocative. Even the word 'scavenging' in his name emphasizes this point.

The end of turn trigger is a little awkward, although sometimes useful, and I'd imagine an updated version would use the newly announced terminologies 'dies'. I could definitely imagine an uncommon aggressive creature with Barony Vampire stats with the text, "... (see all)

I remember playing this card wayyyyy back in the day when I thought making a deck consisted of taking every card I had of whatever colors I wanted to play and stuffing it in a deck. Obviously I lost a lot, but there was one large multiplayer game where this thing kept me on the board for a long, long time. Someone destroyed a bunch of creature tokens and I wound up with, at one point, 22 corpse counters on this guy. Singlehandedly kept me alive for at least 5 turns, until someone threw down with two Holy Lights. Ahh, good times....

Anyway, it has an interesting effect, but it's not really playable as-is. Drop the casting cost by 1 and you'd have something I think.

I misread this and thought he gets +1+1 counters that you can remove to regenerate him. I bought four. ):

In theory, this guy can effectively be an unkillable 2/2. In practice, he's usually just a goofy, needlessly bulky Drudge Skeleton.
