When Brаss Man was used for combos, it was because his activated ability could be used any number of times during the upkeep, rather than just once at the beginning, as re-worded.
Therefore, you could pull off infinite mana (during your upkeep) such as:
Brаss Man + Quicksilver Elemental + Fyndhorn Elder: Have the elemental copy both Brаss Man's and Fyndhorn Elder's abilities to produce more than 1 mana but untap for only 1 mana. If he has a Hermetic Study attached to him, then it's infinite damage.
Brаss Man + Earthcraft + Wild Growth on a basic land: Tap Brаss Man to untap the land, then tap the land for 2 mana, then use 1 to untap Brаss Man. Rinse, repeat. Then, pop a Volcanic Geyser or some instant X spell.
I'm sure there are other combos, but you get the gist of it. Too bad he can't be used to do this anymore. Still, this guy is an excellent 1-dr... (see all)

strictly better than wall of wood. A great card which would still hold up to todays creatures for CMC

I've always had a soft spot for this guy. I'm no Johnny - the combo potential he used to have flew right over my head. I just really thought that he was a surprisingly efficient creature for 1 mana.

Can anyone give some examples of infinite combos used with this guy before the Oracle update? I mean I can think of some with creature enchatnments/equipment from Lorwyn and stuff, but I'm not that familiar with the very early sets.
Edit: Thanks, that helps. Also, does anyone notice that the art shows him as a partially human cyborg rather than just a construct? Kind of creepy.

An oft-overlooked creature that can kill Tattermunge Maniac, Savannah Lions, is Mogg Fanatic-proof, and can block Kird Ape without dying. Even though his ability has been changed in recent Oracle updates so that he can no longer enable infinite comboes, he's still viable for use in many decks, and can hold the line against most early threats until something more substantial comes into play.

So now the official ruling is that his untap ability can be used only once in upkeep? That's boring
