According to MaRo, this card was the "MVP" of one of his favorite older decks, so he designed Tel-Jilad Chosen to update the mechanic.

I think Flying would've been irrelevant. The card's focus was on pro-Artifact. I doubt there were very many flying artifacts in Antiquities (Oh, Ornithopter, but guess who has 0 power anyway?).
Anyway, I really like Tel-Jilad Chosen, so this card is pretty neat too.

Two mana 2/1 with an ability that is two-thirds of "protection from artifact creatures". Not bad in a set with a decent amount of artifact creatures.
