This is conditional and it's lifegain so it's never going to set the world on fire, but in the right deck it will average about 10 life and that isn't too bad.

That's Gerrard, all right. The full quote is

"Fighting without an army is called a duel, and you'll lose a duel if your enemy comes expecting a war."

The statement doesn't make nearly as much sense if you clip off the first part. It's not like they were hurting for text space. Man, Starter was weird.
