It helps you get the mana you need, and unless I'm mistake it stays on the field even after using all its charge counters to help your affinity for artifact cards, or cards that get powered up per artifact on the field. Multiple uses which all end up in getting a strong force on the field.

one of my most used cards,
stockpile mana, then use it to pump out big spells, think turn 4 u have eight mana to use,
you have fixed your mana if you are splashing or have more than two colors
and it stays around to be restocked, returned and played or for affinnity, whats not to like

Do you roll a multi-color deck? And there's a good mana-base as well? This one will shine... forget the tricks you can pull based on the fact that it's an artifact. Earlier people said it, you're two turns ahead if this hits as a 2-drop...

Anything that can get out a WUBRG on turn 3 is awesome.

I'd actually consider running this in a profilerate deck. A mana of any color each time you profilerate doesn't sound bad, especially if you still have the possibility to save it up for an even bigger ramp.

The main advantage of this is that it allows you to drop any 5-mana card turn 3. With the right hand, it's easy to play a Fusion Elemental, Genju of the Realm, Maelstrom Archangel etc. Don't underestimate it.

I have a five color deck that I use to play with my friends. There are four Pentad Prisms in it. This is quite possibly one of the best cards in my opinion. I usually play it on turn 2 and BAM, doubled my mana pool for next turn. When I am lucky enough to draw the rest I have, then I can use to them get out some big creatures quickly. Although it is simple, it is very helpful in getting the mana that you need.

Turn 1: Basic Land (or Mirrodins Core; Tap for Charge Counter)
Turn 2: A different Basic Land; Cast Pentad Prism with 2 Charge Counters, Use those to cast Energy Chamber.
Turn 3: Another Land, Add Charge Counter to Prism... profit!

I use it in a counter deck along with Core Tapper, Power Conduit and Dismantle. It's a hoot to win with cards like Darksteel Reactor, Magistrate's Scepter, etc
