@Aradimar Rarity should not determine cost! I am going to engrave that on the foreheads of everyone on Gatherer if need be!

Hmm, this cards cost limits its use in a fire deck early on, but in a clinch battle against a strong plains or black deck that is gaining life over your damage, its a nice turn of events, aids those pyroclasm & earthquake spells in clearing the field, in guaranteeing the death of whatever your creature that gets +4/+0 is blocking. On the attacking side, the cost doesn't seem that much when you add that extra 4 dmg to an already high fire-breather.

Remember, people, red gets tough creatures only for hilariously prohibitive costs.
This is only 2 mana more than Hill Giant(I know, sorry), for flash, a +4/+0 buff on any creature, and a sturdy 3/4 that you can attack with your next combat step, should you play it on your opponent's turn.

And don't forget that you can flash him in to block and have him block as a 7/4.

Or why not, play him during your own combat step after blockers have been declared to one-up Giant Growth in terms of unblocked creature effectiveness.

Would have been cool if it had haste, I think.

@syrazemyla: you raise a point that I've seen raised a lot on gatherer, which is that rarity shouldn't determine how good a card is. This is true... up to a point. As a dedicated limited player, changing a card's playability and rarity has a huge impact on how well the set drafts. If a really good card can be found at common, it warps the way you pick in draft, and can make the format less fun. I understand the cost concern when a card gets put at rare, but at the same time, imagine that it's possible to find a deck that has two (or even more) of a specific rare. People who think that card quality shouldn't increase with rarity at all don't understand the nuance of creating a fun limited environment.

Oh right, the card:

most purely power-boosting combat tricks don't allow your target to survive combat. This means two things for this card:
-you can one-for-one as a surprise blocker, which is alright
-you still get a card out of the deal after using the pump effect to kill something.

... (see all)
