Looks like a friend of infect in the set. 9/2 Putrefax. Ouch.

R&D forgot the part where you draw a card when the equipped creature goes into the graveyard.

When Infect dudes pretty much double their power when not blocked, +8/-1 seems pretty freakin' busted at 3/2 costs.

Actually this was designed specifically to be hard to use with infect.
Most of the common infectious critters have 1 toughness for a reason. This is that reason.
Edit: Hold on a bloody second!
Why does this card have a quote from a Phyrexian on it?

I've won putting this on Sunblast Angel and Kuldotha Phoenix, and Liege of the Tangle, though I'm not sure if it was the gear or the creatures that did most of the winning

My black/blue evasion heavy deck wanted to equip this card, but it would have killed just about everything that wore it. Oddly better in white/green.

Kor Duelist
Honor of The Pure or Accorder's Shield
Barbed Battlegear
if that's not enough you can always throw in a Grafted Exoskeleton or even a Grafted Wargear

While I don't like how relevant that -1 can be at times (Warlord's Axe, an almost assuredly worse card could at least be chucked on a Squawk turning it into a 4/1), this is definitely a good piece of limited equipment. It's a huge power boost that turns a bear into a behemoth, and while it's still an easy trade for the opponent, they more or less have to make the trade. It makes pretty nice blockers too.
