You hit the nail on the head with an alternative to banding... which is secondary in green, and of which "bands with other" is a variant.
Still, the companion creatures -- X/Y creatures with "{T}: target quality creature gets +X/+Y" -- mostly appear in white creatures as soldiers and spirit:

This card rocks face in pauper cube drafts. Unlike exalted 1-drops like Akrasan Squire, the Veteran actually gets better when you attack with multiple creatures because you can decide which attacker gets the bonus after your opponent declares blockers. This can make it very difficult for your opponent to assign blockers correctly, since he has to consider the possibility that you'll pump up a blocked attacker to trade with or trump the blocker. Or if you're playing R/W you can just pump an unblocked attacker to put his life total within burn range of 0. There's actually a fair amount of strategic depth involved when you're playing with or against this card.

Exactly. This isn't one of his best pieces, but everything he's done is gold. My favorites are Ihsan's Shade, Eron the Relentless, and Order of the Ebon Hand.

I like the card, it just stinks the art it so bad. And @combobuilder, just because other art he's done is good it doesn't mean that this is. @Cheza, bands with other was technically in every color, there was a cycle of lands that gave the ability, there was just only one creature printed with it, Old Fogey, and Master of the Hunt which made "bands with other" tokens (at least originally).

Not really white.
Of course, this is similar to banding, but an inner feeling says that this is more like the old green "bands with..." ability. And since it is limited to attacks, it's an early threat.
Works quite well with early vigilance or untap.... something that I miss in M11.
