this is a much better card then people give it credit for. The ability to give an attacking creature +1/+1 can swing the tide in some cases; the fact that it's a 1 drop makes it even better. I was very happy to see this back in Standard

Not a bad 1-drop. Solid mid-pack choice for those running white in sealed/draft.

To become a veteran in MTG, all it takes is to survive one combat phase (probably turn 2), then sit back and cheer your buddies on? Dear god...
Still, he's not terrible. Two decent subtypes and the ability to pump something that gets through means that he's still useful.

Did you notice that, since Samite Healer was discontinued in M10, this is as close as we've come to it in a core set?
There are in fact no other repeatable ways to buff one target creature mid-combat in M10, M11, M12, or M13!
I wonder if that's because it makes the math too hard for new players, or too hard for computers...

Wait wait wait... on the original printing in Visions, the flavour text said that to survive a war was a dishonour. Now it's a "gift" and point of pride?
Infantry Veteran has gone soft in his old age.
