@Nagoragama: For me, it was the idea that gaining life undid what your opponents were doing to hurt you without being overly antagonizing. Of course, now I understand there are much more efficient ways of neutralizing your opponent's threats and creatures.

I would rather draw a card than gain 7 life. That is why think twice sees play and Heroes Reunion does not.

I have to admit, when I first started Magic, I bought the Starter set, and I have actually played this card. Why do new players so highly value life gain? Alas, I can't ask my past self.

I'd say it was a good teaching card for new players but by the time the card advantage makes an impact enough time may have already passed that they don't make the connection between casting this and losing. Plus it's lifegain so that's another strike against it.
