QUESTION: Due to the recent change in the rules text of this card, do you actually need a creature to be able to use this card?
SCENARIO: You get attacked for 10 damage. You cast this. Looking at the rules, you gain 10 life. "You gain life equal to the damage dealt to you this turn." Then you search for a creature to have the 10 damage dealt to. "Simulacrum deals damage to target creature you control equal to the damage dealt to you this turn." If you have no creatures, what happens then?
Take for example, the following card (probably a poor example of many). Unbreathing Horde. You have this card out with a Cemetery Reaper. Now, damage is dealt to the Unbreathing Horde, and let's say, it already has zero +1/+1 counters on it (but is still alive from the Cemetery Reaper's buff). The rules state to prevent all damage and remove a +1/+1 counter from Unbreathing Horde, however it is common knowledge that because it is buffed from th... (see all)

Spells require legal targets to be cast, so you must control a creature to cast Simularum.
Comboing with Stuffy Doll, Boros Reckoner, or Spitemare seems like a good idea. Other than that, Darkness may be a more effective Fog for a mono-black deck.
